Police Officer Passes Away After Childbirth; Chiang Wan-an Promises Full Protection for Child and Family

A female police officer, surnamed Chen, from the Taipei City Police Department's Zhongzheng First Precinct, passed away in the early hours of the 20th due to massive postpartum hemorrhage. Her newborn daughter, An-an, is currently receiving treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit for brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an visited the mourning hall today to pay his respects and promised to protect her family and child with all available resources.

Officer Chen gave birth to her first child, An-an, on the 18th but tragically passed away before she could see her daughter. Her death has caused profound sadness among her colleagues and the public. An-an remains under observation in the ICU due to severe complications from the birth.

Mayor Chiang expressed his deep sorrow on Facebook tonight, describing Chen as an outstanding officer with a strong sense of justice and responsibility. Despite serving in a demanding unit like the Zhongzheng First Precinct, she was known for her positive attitude and willingness to take on missions at the frontline.

Chiang recalled that in 2024, Chen was awarded the 'Jinwu Award,' the highest honor for Taipei police, standing out among 7,000 officers. He personally presented her with the award and took a photo with her family, expressing how proud he was of her.

Upon hearing the news, the Mayor immediately instructed the Police Department to assist with the funeral and provide long-term care and support. He visited the mourning hall this afternoon, observing many colleagues voluntarily gathering to pay their respects, highlighting how much she was loved.

Officer Chen's father, who served as a volunteer police officer for 30 years, told the Mayor that his daughter likely joined the force because she saw him wearing the uniform from a young age. Chiang remarked that her loss is a loss for the nation, not just her family.

In addition to his condolences, Chiang assured the family that the Police Department, Health Bureau, and Social Welfare Bureau would provide immediate assistance whenever needed. He specifically requested Mackay Hospital to exert all efforts in saving Chen's daughter.

Chiang told the late officer to rest in peace: 'We will fully protect your child's health and safety, and take care of the family you loved and cared for most.'
