(Central News Agency, Nicosia, 23rd) President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today welcomed the European Union's approval of a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine. He also stated that Ukraine should be granted full EU membership, rather than just a "symbolic" one.
According to AFP, Zelenskyy posted on the X platform: "Today is an important day for our defense and our relationship with the European Union. The EU's support loan to Ukraine has been unfrozen—90 billion euros, disbursed over two years."
This loan had previously been stalled due to obstruction by the outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.
He emphasized: "After more than four years of full-scale war, it is highly significant that Ukraine can secure financial guarantees of this scale." Zelenskyy urged that the first tranche be disbursed by May or June.
Zelenskyy also stated today in an audio message to journalists, including AFP: "Ukraine does not need symbolic EU membership. We are defending shared European values. I believe we rightfully deserve full EU membership."
He also mentioned that in the war of attrition against Russia, which has entered its fifth year, Ukraine's situation in recent months has been in its "most stable" phase.
On his way to Cyprus to attend an EU leaders' summit, Zelenskyy told reporters via an audio message: "For the past 10 months, we have been in our most stable situation. But we also know very well that it remains extremely difficult for the brothers on the frontlines, and there is absolutely no room to relax." (Translated by Ho Hung-ju) 1150423
