(CNA, Glasgow, 22nd) Richard Horne, head of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), delivered a speech today pointing out that the most severe cyberattacks currently facing the UK are launched by hostile states such as Russia, Iran, and China.
According to an Associated Press report, Horne warned that the UK is experiencing "the most drastic geopolitical shifts in modern history." He emphasized that British businesses must be prepared to defend against cyberattacks, because if the UK becomes embroiled in international conflict, it could face "large-scale" attacks.
In recent months, countries including Sweden, Poland, Denmark, and Norway have warned that hackers linked to Russia are targeting their critical infrastructure, including power plants and dams.
Horne noted that the UK's NCSC currently handles about four "national-level critical" cyber incidents per week. Although criminal activities like ransomware remain the most common problem, the most serious threat comes from cyberattacks launched directly or indirectly by other nations.
He also mentioned that Chinese intelligence and military agencies have demonstrated a "staggeringly high level of sophistication" in their cyber operations. (Translated by: Chen Zhengjian) 1150423
