(CNA, Bangkok, 22nd) Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stated today that Myanmar's new President Min Aung Hlaing told him that the imprisoned former civilian government de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi is currently receiving good care, and said the government is considering 'some good news'.

According to Reuters, in the remarks released by the Thai government after Sihasak met with junta-leader-turned-President Min Aung Hlaing in Myanmar's capital Naypyitaw, Min Aung Hlaing did not provide further details.

Sihasak said: 'Many Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries are concerned about Aung San Suu Kyi and her physical and mental health. He (referring to Min Aung Hlaing) said they are considering some good news, so this might be a good thing.'

'They are trying to show that they are moving in a better direction. These actions are necessary because we want them to return to ASEAN. We want to help them, but if they don't help themselves, there is nothing we can do.'

The 80-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi has been imprisoned since Min Aung Hlaing launched a coup to overthrow her government in 2021.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who remains highly beloved in Myanmar, was originally sentenced to a total of 27 years in prison on multiple charges. Her allies state that the charges, including incitement, corruption, election fraud, and violation of the official secrets act, are politically motivated.

Min Aung Hlaing issued a pardon last week, reducing Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence by 1/6, and the related measures also released her ally, former President Win Myint.
