Responding to World Book Day: Shoushan Zoo Creates Special Food-Hiding Paper Books for Chimpanzees

(CNA Reporter Tsai Meng-yu, Kaohsiung, 22nd) In response to "World Book Day" on April 23, Shoushan Zoo showed its creativity by teaming up with zoo volunteers to create "food-hiding corrugated paper books" for its chimpanzees. This requires the chimpanzees to use their brains and hands to enjoy the surprises hidden in the books, simultaneously training their observation skills and finger dexterity.

Following last year's fun "book reading" experience for "World Book and Copyright Day," Shoushan Zoo once again unleashed its creativity this year, working with volunteers to craft the "food-hiding corrugated paper books" for the chimpanzees.

Kao Min-lin, Director of the Tourism Bureau, stated that the special "food-hiding corrugated paper books" are made from recycled cardboard boxes. Sunflower seeds, a favorite of the chimpanzees, are cleverly hidden between the pages. This setup requires them to use both their minds and hands to claim the hidden treats, effectively training their observation and finger dexterity.

Faced with the "food-hiding corrugated paper books," the chimpanzee "Man Hua" eagerly grabbed several of the specially made books at once, climbed onto the perch, flipped them open, and carefully savored the sunflower seeds hidden inside. Another chimpanzee, "Li Zhong," curiously approached to read along with "Man Hua," and shortly after, picked up a newspaper-shaped book to start exploring.

The zoo also revealed that the chimpanzees "Mei Zhen," "Man Hua," and "Li Zhong" coincidentally all started searching for sunflower seeds hidden in the "job vacancy" section of a special corrugated newspaper at the same time, creating an amusing scene that looked as if they were looking for jobs.
