(Central News Agency reporter Zhang Yilian, Kaohsiung, 22nd) The Meishan Suspension Bridge in Taoyuan District, Kaohsiung, had its structural safety affected by a disaster in July 2025. The Council of Indigenous Peoples subsidized NT$43.8 million for its reconstruction project. After completion, it will be able to carry 2.5-ton trucks and ambulances, hoping to improve transportation and agricultural product logistics in the Meishan community.

The Kaohsiung City Government Indigenous Peoples Affairs Commission stated that the Meishan Suspension Bridge has weathered 30 years of elements, and the main cables supporting the bridge body showed obvious rust and other conditions. The reconstruction period is expected to take 8 months. The bridge deck will be widened from the original 1.7 meters to 2.1 meters, enabling it to carry 2.5-ton trucks and ambulances, strengthening agricultural product transportation capacity, and enhancing the wind-resistant structural system. At the same time, indigenous totems will be added, making it a modern tribal landmark with disaster prevention, transportation, and tourism functions.

The Council of Indigenous Peoples issued a press release stating that the "Meishan Suspension Bridge Post-Disaster Restoration and Reconstruction Project" held its groundbreaking ceremony today. Deputy Minister Qucung Qalavangan and others attended, hoping that through bridge renovation and facility improvement, road traffic safety will be enhanced, allowing tribal members to commute, attend school, and seek medical care with peace of mind.

Qucung stated that the Meishan Suspension Bridge is a vital transportation artery for Meishan community members traveling between their workplaces and living areas. In July 2025, due to Typhoon Danas, the bridge components showed fatigue damage and other conditions, affecting the structural safety of the bridge.

Qucung said that to ensure the daily passage and safety of tribal residents, the Council of Indigenous Peoples subsidized NT$43.8 million in November 2025 for the reconstruction project, and the bidding was completed in March this year. It is hoped that the project will be completed on schedule and with quality, providing a safe transportation environment for tribal members, which will help the Meishan community market agricultural specialties such as plums and red-fleshed plums, promoting the development of tribal industries.
