(CNA Reporter Lu Kang-chun, Hsinchu City, 22nd) The Hsinchu City Government pointed out that in recent years, it has been promoting an empowerment service utilizing hand-crank bicycles for people with disabilities. This year, it has commissioned the Life Tree LOHAS Rehabilitation Association to run the program, allowing friends with disabilities to borrow them for free, thereby expanding their range of mobility and breaking the threshold of sports activities limited by physical conditions.
The Hsinchu City Government Social Affairs Department issued a press release today stating that the hand-crank bicycle service has gradually developed into a representative barrier-free sports service. The core of the service this year lies in a systematized borrowing mechanism. A professional team provides individualized advanced training based on the trainees' conditions, ensuring that the disabled can effectively use technological assistive devices and improve their physical fitness through regular exercise.
In the press release, 72-year-old Mr. Peng, a senior trainee of the hand-crank bicycle empowerment service, said he has suffered from polio since childhood. Through this service, he has exercised continuously for over 6 years, and his physical strength and cardiopulmonary functions have significantly improved. Not only has he challenged himself to a round-the-island trip, but he is also able to participate in various long-distance folk activities. He now serves as an instructor, encouraging new trainees to exercise by borrowing the vehicles for free and regaining their confidence in life.
63-year-old Ms. Chen pointed out that due to decreasing physical strength from aging, she felt an increase in muscle endurance and physical stability less than a year after starting the hand-crank bicycle service. Besides providing professional assistive devices, this service allows her to experience the joy of riding in the wind amidst nature with companionship, while also building a sense of achievement.
The Social Affairs Department stated that the hand-crank bicycle empowerment service center is located at 123 Nanliao Street, Hsinchu City, providing free rental services from Tuesday to Saturday, allowing friends with disabilities to ride for leisure according to their needs. Those in need can contact the Disabled Welfare Section of the Hsinchu City Government Social Affairs Department. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150422
