(Central News Agency reporter Chang Chi-min, Kaohsiung, 22nd) An officer surnamed Wu from the Second Squadron, First Battalion of the Fifth Special Police Corps, allegedly fired a single shot into the air with his service weapon in an open area at the corps headquarters on the 20th, out of dissatisfaction with a support duty assignment. No injuries were reported. Police stated that the case is being investigated for the crime of intimidation and endangering safety, and he was also given a major demerit.

The Fifth Special Police Corps explained today that Officer Wu, from the Second Squadron, First Battalion, was on duty guarding the armory from 4 PM to 8 PM on the 20th. At around 7:30 PM, he took his service weapon to the open area in front of the Zhizhen Building at the headquarters and fired one shot into the air, causing no casualties.

According to preliminary police understanding, 40 officers are required to be deployed in May to support the Kaohsiung and Tainan City Police Departments for an eight-month assignment. Wu, who is about 50 years old, was among those on the support list. He mistakenly believed that mostly senior officers were assigned this time and suspected foul play. Furthermore, he was recently feeling depressed due to family issues, which led him to fire the bullet while on duty.

Chen Wen-yao, Deputy Commander of the Fifth Special Police Corps, said during a joint media interview that the rotation order for support duty is transparent and based on a fair rotation. For this assignment, officers publicly selected their support units at the 7th-floor auditorium of the headquarters' administration building at 10 AM on the 17th. The entire process was fair, just, and devoid of any foul play.

The corps added that among the 40 people on the list, only 4 are senior officers over the age of 50, with the majority being between 30 and 40 years old, denying any specific targeting of senior personnel.

A press release from the Fifth Special Police Corps noted that Wu's behavior allegedly violated the crime of intimidation and endangering safety. In accordance with regulations, he has been referred by the Renwu Precinct of the Kaohsiung City Police Department to the Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office for investigation. In addition, the National Police Agency has approved a major demerit for Wu, and the administrative responsibility of relevant supervisors for inadequate oversight will be pursued.

Police stated that they will subsequently strengthen officers' duty discipline and legal education, continuously care for the mental and physical well-being of the personnel, and prevent similar incidents from happening again. Furthermore, they will regularly publish information regarding the support rotation list every month to provide clear guidelines for colleagues and avoid misunderstandings.
