(Central News Agency, Taipei, 21st) According to Yonhap News Agency, two Chinese high school students are suspected of repeatedly entering South Korea within less than a year to unauthorizedly photograph fighter jets and military control facilities of US and South Korean forces. They appeared in court today at the Suwon District Court in South Korea and were each sought 3 to 4 years imprisonment by South Korean prosecutors.
According to the report, the Suwon District Court today held the closing trial for the two Chinese high school students. Prosecutors sought 3 to 4 years imprisonment for one of them and 4 years for the other, and requested the court to confiscate the cameras and other items used by the two to photograph US-South Korean military facilities. Prosecutors directly pointed out that threatening military security is a serious criminal act, and the two defendants "showed no remorse."
However, the two Chinese high school students, in their final statements during today's trial, argued that they did not expect their "actions purely out of curiosity" would lead to such serious consequences, and they deeply reflected on this, hoping the court would consider a lenient sentence.
The report directly pointed out that the two Chinese high school students entered South Korea 3 times and 2 times respectively from the second half of 2024 to March 2025, and are suspected of using digital cameras with telephoto lenses and mobile phones to photograph fighter jets and control facilities near multiple military facilities and international airports in South Korea.
South Korean investigations found that the unauthorized photos taken by the two involved four US-South Korean military facilities, including Suwon Air Base, Pyeongtaek Osan Air Base and US Base, and Cheongju Air Base, as well as three international airports: Incheon, Gimpo, and Jeju. They were arrested by local police on the afternoon of March 21 while unauthorizedly photographing fighter jets taking off and landing near Suwon Air Base.
