(CNA Reporter Wang Chao-yu, Keelung, 21st) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Keelung mayoral candidate and City Council Speaker Tung Tzu-wei visited elementary schools on the 15th and yesterday to check on nutritious lunches, which the Kuomintang (KMT) questioned as a violation of administrative neutrality. The DPP stated today that it is perfectly reasonable and part of his duties for the speaker to visit educational sites to understand the status of students' lunches.

The KMT Keelung City Chapter held a press conference this morning. Chapter deputy spokesperson Huang Po-yuan stated that according to relevant regulations, campuses should maintain political neutrality and avoid the intervention of political activities. He noted that Tung Tzu-wei's repeated entry into campuses to interact with students has caused public concern and put execution pressure on school authorities.

KMT Keelung City Councilor Han Shih-yu pointed out that as a member of the council's education committee, the committee does not visit educational sites without reason. He suggested that even during lunch hours, Tung Tzu-wei should follow normal procedures with the education committee, apply to the Keelung City Government Education Department to enter the schools, and collectively show concern for the quality of nutritious lunches.

In response, DPP Keelung City Chapter executive director Yu Jui-po said that Tung Tzu-wei is a representative elected by the citizens of Keelung. He is not only a councilor but also the speaker representing the Keelung City Council. Yu argued that it is perfectly reasonable and part of his duties for the speaker to personally visit educational sites to understand the status of students' lunches. He added that the KMT's nervous over-politicization of the matter is not a blessing for the citizens.

Yu Jui-po also reminded the KMT that members of the council's education committee are also candidates. He suggested the KMT city chapter align their narrative with Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang's city government first to avoid contradicting themselves. He pointed out that Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an also enjoyed lunch with students at a school earlier this month, asking why the KMT did not fiercely criticize that, suggesting it might be another KMT double standard.
