(Central News Agency reporter Yang Yao-ju, Taipei, 21st) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is striving to increase the ownership rate of its overseas missions. MOFA Secretariat Director-General Chen Chin-ling stated today that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney is currently negotiating a purchase contract. Following renovations, the goal is to officially move into the new premises by the end of 2027. This will be MOFA's first newly purchased mission property since late 2023.

MOFA has been pushing a property acquisition plan for overseas missions. Currently, owned office spaces and official residences account for 17.12% and 27.03% respectively of its 111 overseas missions. Since late 2023, no new properties have been acquired. According to MOFA's general budget explanation for the 2026 fiscal year, the Sydney office conducted on-site inspections of 5 potential properties. After evaluation, an agent was commissioned to contact the owners of suitable properties to inquire about their willingness to sell.

Chen Chin-ling explained at a regular press conference this morning that the Sydney office is negotiating a purchase contract. It is expected that ownership transfer procedures will proceed after signing, followed by interior design and the procurement of office equipment. The goal is to officially move into the new location by the end of 2027.

Media followed up on the status of purchase plans for missions in Houston, Denver, and Boston, which were submitted to the Executive Yuan last year.

Chen stated that they are currently revising and adjusting the plans based on feedback from relevant Executive Yuan meetings. Supported by government financial resources, MOFA will continue to assist overseas missions in advancing property purchases and will update the public on progress in due course.

According to MOFA statistics, from 2003 to 2024, the construction and purchase of 10 office spaces—including offices in New York, Jordan, and Los Angeles—and 2 official residences (Permanent Mission to the WTO and Jordan) were completed. Combined with the original 9 offices and 28 residences, by the end of 2024, the number of owned offices and residences stood at 19 and 30, respectively. (Editor: Chang Jo-yao) 1150421
