Running for Kaohsiung City Party Chairperson, Huang Jie: Will Fully Support Year-End Elections

Kaohsiung, Taiwan – April 21, 2024 – DPP legislator Huang Jie registered this morning to run for the Democratic Progressive Party's Kaohsiung City Party Chairperson position. She was accompanied by all female city councilors and council candidates from Kaohsiung, symbolizing the rise and unity of the DPP's female political force. Huang Jie stated that the DPP is a very free and open party. Although she is not a long-time party member, she will dedicate herself to grassroots party organization work with sincerity and enthusiasm to contribute to the DPP. Huang said that if elected chairperson, her most important task will be to fully support DPP Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Lai Jui-lung, as well as ensure the successful election of Kaohsiung city councilors and all village chiefs. She believes that a strong grassroots foundation is essential for promoting municipal affairs and continuing the highly satisfactory governance of Mayor Chen Chi-mai. Huang also mentioned her strength in "aerial combat" (online campaigning) and hopes to use this to promote the DPP's strengths and its excellent candidates. She likened the role of party chairperson to a cheerleading captain, aiming to rally fans to cheer for the DPP's Kaohsiung team. She also urged party members to vote enthusiastically on May 24th and give her their support to move forward with the DPP. Furthermore, KMT Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Ko Chih-en recently suggested that Huang Jie's candidacy for party chairperson would make people curious about who the DPP's mayoral candidate is. In response, Huang Jie stated that Ko Chih-en is trying to sow discord and fears a united DPP. Mayor Chen Chi-mai told reporters this morning before a city government meeting that he encourages young people to take on responsibility, calling it a good thing. He noted that the city party chairperson's most crucial task this year is to fully support the year-end elections, coordinate among various factions, and leverage social influence to encourage public support for the DPP. He acknowledged that this is a very challenging responsibility. Chen expressed hope that the best chairperson candidate will emerge through democratic procedures to bear this responsibility.
