(Central News Agency reporter Yang Shu-min, Taipei, 21st) Taipei City's firefly season activities are gradually unfolding. The Department of Education today shared an event organized by the Environmental Education Center, a night exploration of Ma Ming Tan, Taipei City's only remaining ancient wetland, which amazed parents and children with the deep ecological experience and knowledge gained in the urban area. The event runs until May 3rd, urging citizens to seize the opportunity.
The Department of Education released information sharing that the Taipei City School Environmental Education Center, in conjunction with the "2026 Taipei Children's Month - Holiday Learning Activities," held the "Night Exploration of Ma Ming Tan - Firefly Tour" parent-child camp activities on the 17th and 24th. It led parents and children to slow down their pace in the night, approaching nature without disturbance, bringing an astonishing in-depth experience to families.
The Department of Education cited an example: Zhou Shenghan, a student from Xinhai Elementary School who participated in the event, said that he learned there are as many as 54 types of fireflies in Taiwan and never imagined such a wonderful firefly habitat existed near his home. Another parent, Mr. Chen, also said that in the past, firefly viewing was only at a fixed spot, but this time a thorough introduction was provided.
Chen Yicheng, a student from Jianan Elementary School, was also very surprised to see two fireflies preparing to mate, and it dispelled his misconception that the glowing part was the tail, correctly learning that a firefly's body structure is divided into three parts.
The Department of Education added that the yellow-margined fireflies observed in this activity are aquatic fireflies, which rely on clean water quality and stable habitat conditions to survive. The theme of the 2026 Taipei Children's Month, "Dream Taipei, Children's Market," hopes to instill in children the values of being environmentally friendly. Various departments have launched a series of limited-time firefly season activities, running until May 3rd. Citizens are urged to check the Environmental Education Center's official website or the Taipei Parks Firefly theme website. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150421
