(Taipei, April 21, CNA reporter Wang Yang-wen) Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tsai Yi-yu today questioned the Executive Yuan, suggesting that from the perspective of local development and tourism, the entire Taiwan Railways system should be elevated. Premier Cho Jung-tai explained that if he could choose, he would prefer urban undergrounding and cross-county elevated railways, stating that this would be a great step forward for the country.
The Legislative Yuan today invited Premier Cho Jung-tai and others to report on the compilation process of the "115th Fiscal Year Central Government General Budget Bill" and to answer questions.
Legislator Tsai Yi-yu, who hails from Chiayi County, raised the issue of railway construction during his interpellation. He suggested that the entire Taiwan Railways system be converted to elevated railways and adopt the 1435 mm standard gauge, arguing that this would not only increase speed but also make Taiwan Railways much stronger in the future. He added that given the current national tax revenue growth, it is feasible to achieve this.
Premier Cho Jung-tai stated that if he could choose, it should be "urban undergrounding and cross-county elevated railways," because, taking Taipei City as an example, after the railway was undergrounded, the road surface became very smooth. If this approach is adopted, the country will make great progress.
Premier Cho Jung-tai explained that he would ask the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to plan which sections can be strengthened. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications is currently promoting Taiwan Railways' four 90-minute round-the-island goals, including Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes, and also Kaohsiung to Taitung, Taitung to Hualien, and Hualien to Taipei. If the relevant routes can be completed, it can also develop another aspect of tourism. (Edited by: Chang Jo-yao) 1150421
