(Central News Agency, Brussels, 21st, Comprehensive Foreign Report) The European Union (EU) said today it is considering increasing imports of jet fuel from the United States and requiring member states to maintain minimum reserves to cope with tight fuel supplies caused by the war in the Middle East.

AFP reported that Iran's effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has caused energy prices to soar and threatened the stability of global jet fuel supplies. According to the European Commission, the 27 EU countries rely on imports through the Strait of Hormuz for about 20% of the jet fuel they consume.

European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, pointed out that although there are no signs of an "actual shortage" yet, inventories in some parts of Europe are under pressure, and the EU must be prepared.

"We are working to secure alternative sources of jet fuel for Europe, such as Jet A produced in the United States," he said at a press conference after a video conference with EU transport ministers. (Compiled by: Chen Cheng-chien) 1150421
