(Central News Agency reporter Yang Yao-ju, Taipei, 21st) With Mother's Day approaching, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that the Taipei Guest House will be open to the public on May 9th. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu will prepare carnation bouquets on that day to convey blessings and respect.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a regular press conference this morning. Chen Chin-ling, Director of the Secretariat, stated that the Taipei Guest House has been open to the public on holidays since June 2006, with nearly 40 volunteers assisting with guided tours and other services. Each opening attracts 1,000 to 2,000 visitors, and to date, over 200 holiday open house events have been held, accumulating 370,000 visitors, making it an important platform for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote public diplomacy.
In response to the upcoming Mother's Day, Chen Chin-ling mentioned that the Taipei Guest House will hold an open house event on May 9th. On that day, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu will specially prepare carnation bouquets for visitors to celebrate Mother's Day together and convey respect and blessings to every mother.
Furthermore, Chen Chin-ling pointed out that the perimeter walls of the Taipei Guest House have shown deformation and tilting. Based on evaluations by a professional guidance team (China University of Technology) commissioned by the Ministry of Culture since 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to sequentially promote wall restoration work over three years, costing approximately NT$28 million. This plan passed cultural heritage review last September and was approved by the Ministry of Culture last December.
Chen Chin-ling explained that the tilting of the walls is likely due to the excavation of a pond in the northern garden during the early Japanese colonial period, with excavated soil placed within the garden, creating an uneven ground level difference of up to about 110 cm between the inside and outside of the walls. Over time, this led to increasing differences in earth pressure and water content, which is judged to be the main cause of the wall deformation. Temporary support measures have currently been implemented.
Chen Chin-ling stated that the Secretariat is currently conducting relevant bidding procedures in accordance with cultural heritage preservation principles. The supervision technical service outsourcing was completed last August; for the turnkey project, evaluation procedures are currently underway. (Editor: Chang Jo-yao) 1150421
