TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNA) -- The Iran conflict is damaging America's global influence and exacerbating strained relations with some traditional allies, a trend that had already begun under Trump's second term. Concerns are rising that such a loss of power may be difficult to reverse amidst the US-China geopolitical competition.

POLITICO reports that from Bangladesh in South Asia to Slovenia in Eastern Europe, fuel rationing has restricted transportation, and leaders are complaining about bearing the consequences of an unwanted war for no reason. In traditionally pro-American Muslim countries like Bahrain and Indonesia, US diplomats have found media saturated with anti-American sentiment, often occurring with tacit government approval.

Even NATO allies have provided very limited support to the US in the Iran conflict. Some countries are still concerned that the Trump administration did not consult them before initiating military action against Iran.

The report points out that Trump's haphazard use of US economic and military power (including tariff measures) after returning to the White House has led to gradual estrangement between the US and most countries worldwide, and the current war with Iran appears to be accelerating this trend.

An Asian diplomat in Washington said, "Many people are fed up with the chaos of this war and its potential economic impact. If the next president is more rational, America's image might improve. But policymakers around the world inevitably wonder, to what extent can alliances with Washington be maintained? How much must be sacrificed to align with the US? What should be done if the US can no longer be relied upon?"

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated in a video released on the 19th that Canada's economic ties with the US are a "weakness" that must be corrected. This is the latest example of allies seeking to distance themselves from the US.

Carney said, "We must take care of ourselves because we cannot rely on a single foreign partner. We cannot control instability from our neighbors, nor can we entrust our future to the idea that this chaos will end abruptly." Carney has recently increased his criticism of Trump, partly due to Trump's threats regarding Greenland.

Some former US officials say that Trump's constantly changing objectives regarding Iran have made foreign partners even more uneasy.

Thomas Wright, who was responsible for long-term strategy at the White House National Security Council during the Biden administration, said, "Allies now don't know what to believe, and adversaries don't know what to fear. Even (Trump's) own cabinet doesn't know his strategy or his true intentions."

He added, "In the long run, the situation is not yet irreversible. But the question is, if this state of disorientation continues, what will China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran do in the next two years and nine months?" (Compiled by: Chen Yi-wei) 1150421
