Central News Agency (Taipei, April 14) -- Ms. Yang, accused of repeatedly mixing rat poison into the food and drink of Australian student Alex Shorey, has been indicted by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on charges of attempted murder, seeking a sentence of over 8 years. As Ms. Yang's travel ban was nearing expiration, the Taipei District Court today ruled to extend her restriction on exiting and sailing by 8 months, effective April 28.

Prosecutors and police investigations revealed that Ms. Yang met Alex Shorey, a 23-year-old student at a northern university studying Chinese, in January 2023. Although they did not become a formal couple, Ms. Yang developed strong feelings for Mr. Shorey. After Mr. Shorey completed his Chinese program and intended to return to Australia early, Ms. Yang became displeased and allegedly mixed rat poison into his food and drink multiple times in an attempt to prevent his return. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office indicted Ms. Yang in December 2024 on charges of attempted murder.

The Taipei District Court held a full-day hearing on March 11 of this year. The morning session heard testimony from Mr. Shorey and a nurse who cared for him, while the afternoon session heard testimony from Mr. Shorey's parents. After the hearing concluded, Mr. Shorey stated through his lawyer, Chen Liang-ting, that he does not wish for such an incident to happen again and hopes the court will impose an appropriate sentence on Ms. Yang.

The Taipei District Court is scheduled to hold another hearing on the morning of May 27. Given that Ms. Yang's travel ban is about to expire, the court today ruled to extend her restriction on exiting and sailing by 8 months, commencing April 28. (Editor: Li Hsi-chang) 1150414.
