TAIPEI, April 20 (CNA) -- Following the publication of its Taiwan Power Cultural Heritage Series, Taipower has now released its first popular science picture book on hydropower, titled "Island Power." An accompanying illustration exhibition was also held at the Taipower Headquarters' cultural gallery, officially opening today and running until May 18th.
Taipower stated in a press release that hydropower, as Taiwan's earliest form of electricity generation, has witnessed the progress of Taiwan's industrial development. To record this precious historical memory, Taipower collaborated with a cultural content creation team, undertaking site visits to power plants for a year to gather material, resulting in the first power industry cultural history popular science picture book, "Island Power: Taiwan Hydropower Time Travel Reading."
Taipower explained that the picture book focuses on the hydropower plants in the Zoshui River basin, detailing the evolutionary process of hydropower from generating its first kilowatt-hour a century ago, to being the main power source in the 1950s and 60s, and its current role in supporting the power system with rapid response. It is complemented by rich popular science knowledge, including hydropower principles, the daily work of power plant professionals, and the cultural history of the power industry. The illustrations are by renowned illustrator Croter, a winner of the Golden Tripod Award and international illustration awards, who used delicate brushwork to transform electrical expertise into an engaging and informative picture book. The book was also selected for Eslite Bookstore's May Children's Book selection list.
Chen Xin-yi, the author who previously compiled cultural heritage books for Taipower, shared that the team discovered many interesting anecdotes about hydropower during the research process. For instance, Sun Moon Lake, a famous scenic spot, is not only a prime location for cycling tours and mass swimming events but also a significant hydropower hub and the "nation's largest battery storage system." Illustrator Croter, aiming for both accuracy and readability, extensively referenced model diagrams of equipment and visited power plants to understand the mechanical structures. He transformed complex generator units into simple and easy-to-understand illustrations for the picture book.
To complement the picture book, Taipower is also hosting the "Island Power: Taiwan Hydropower Time Travel Reading" illustration exhibition at the Taipower Headquarters cultural gallery, running until May 18th, allowing visitors an immersive experience of the stories depicted in the book.
