Tainan, April 20 (Central News Agency) - A 58-year-old man in Tainan suffered from prostate enlargement, but due to his ongoing plans for fatherhood, he worried that traditional surgery would affect his sexual function. He therefore had a urinary catheter inserted for nine months. Doctors evaluated and decided to use an upgraded water vapor ablation surgery to help him get rid of the catheter and preserve his sexual function.

Zeng Wen-xin, a chief urologist at Chimei Hospital, stated at an in-hospital health education seminar today that the patient was found to have a prostate volume of approximately 95 milliliters (normal is about 20 ml). Due to severe urinary retention, he had a urinary catheter inserted for nine months. Previously, multiple doctors had recommended surgical treatment, but the patient, still planning to have children, was hesitant due to concerns that traditional prostate surgery might cause retrograde ejaculation.

Zeng Wen-xin explained that after detailed evaluation and communication with the patient, they opted for the upgraded water vapor ablation surgery. By simultaneously performing a transurethral prostate incision, they alleviated the swelling pressure during the initial stage of water vapor ablation treatment. The catheter was successfully removed eight days after surgery, and the patient regained natural urination function without any impact on his ejaculatory function.

He said that prostate water vapor ablation surgery has advantages such as small wounds, low bleeding volume, and a low incidence of retrograde ejaculation, making it a choice for many patients who value their quality of life. However, for patients with larger prostate volumes or median lobe hypertrophy, it often requires increasing the number of water vapor injections, which can easily lead to increased postoperative tissue swelling, thereby increasing the risk of urinary tract infections and hematuria, and prolonging catheterization time.

Zeng Wen-xin stated that Chimei Hospital has developed an upgraded water vapor ablation surgery, accumulating over 130 cases in the past two years. By incising the prostate outlet, it can effectively reduce the resistance to urination caused by postoperative swelling, and patients recover faster, balancing treatment effectiveness with safety. Clinical data and related results have been published in medical journals.

He added that with the advancement of medical technology, there are now multiple treatment options for prostate enlargement, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. He advises patients to fully discuss and communicate with professional physicians, and after a detailed evaluation, choose the most suitable plan. Early intervention and treatment can help improve long-term quality of life. (Editor: Zhang Mingkun) 1150420
