(Central News Agency reporter Huang Chao-wen, Taipei, April 20) The Labor Day holiday is for three days. The Directorate-General of Highways, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, stated today that traffic is expected to gradually emerge from the afternoon of April 30th. It is predicted that 17 provincial road sections will be prone to congestion during the holiday, including sections of major regional roads such as Provincial Highway 1 at the Shuidi Road intersection, Provincial Highway 61 from Fengbi to Xiangshan, Zhunan-Xuanbao Bridge, and Zhongzhang Bridge; sections connecting to freeways, including Provincial Highway 64, Provincial Highway 65, Provincial Highway 74, Provincial Highway 86 at the Tainan System, Provincial Highway 86 at the Guiren Interchange, Provincial Highway 88 Expressway, and Provincial Highway 18 connecting to various national freeway interchanges.
Other important scenic tourist areas with nearby sections prone to congestion include Provincial Highway 2 sections from Guandu to Tamsui, Wanli to Dawulun, and Fulong; Provincial Highway 3 section from Gukeng to Meishan; Provincial Highway 9A section from Xindian to Wulai; and Provincial Highway 21 section near Sun Moon Lake.
To alleviate congestion, the Highway Bureau stated that it will plan alternative route guidance, flexibly adjust traffic signal timings, implement partial intersection closures and controls, and control heavy vehicle traffic based on the traffic characteristics of each section during the consecutive holidays. It will also coordinate with local police to strengthen traffic order maintenance and intensify enforcement of traffic violations in congested areas.
To encourage the public to drive less and use public transportation more during the holiday period, the Highway Bureau announced that several bus discount measures will be launched from the day before the holiday to the last day (from 12:00 AM on April 30th to 11:59 PM on May 3rd) to provide convenience for travelers returning home and going on trips.
The Highway Bureau further listed that 86 long-distance national highway bus routes will offer an 85% discount. Additionally, for TPASS2.0 members, after accumulating 2 to 3 rides in a month, they can receive an additional 15% cashback, and after accumulating 4 or more rides, they can receive an additional 30% cashback, totaling up to a 40% discount when combined. Furthermore, after taking a national highway bus, Taiwan Railways, or High-Speed Rail, passengers can enjoy one free local bus fare or a basic mileage free ride within 10 hours of transfer (passengers with paper tickets must first tap their electronic transit card at the station's reader before transferring to enjoy the discount). Designated 'Happy Buses' will be free. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) April 20, 2026
