Surveillance camera footage showed a fireball and large plumes of smoke rising into the sky at the time of the explosion. Panama Fire Department Director Victor Alvarez stated that one individual, presumed to be an employee of the facility, died in the explosion, and two firefighters sustained minor injuries. The Panama Canal Authority indicated that the explosion did not affect the canal's operations.
