Trump Calls Iran Conflict a 'Minor Interlude,' Plays Economic Card to Woo Voters

(Central News Agency, Washington, April 16, comprehensive foreign wire report) U.S. President Trump said today that the U.S. conflict with Iran was a "minor interlude" in his second term, and that the U.S. economy is "far surpassing the best economic levels in our history."

Agence France-Presse reported that recent polls show the conflict is unpopular with the American public.

At an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Trump promoted the "tip tax exemption" measure from the major tax reform bill passed last year and touted his economic achievements since returning to the White House last year.

Trump told supporters: "In my first term, we had the best economy in our history. And we are now far surpassing... even though we had a minor interlude, turning to Iran, this beautiful country, beautiful place."

He then added: "But we had to do it, otherwise bad things, very bad things, could happen." This implied that Iran might develop nuclear weapons.

NBC News reported that Trump also said that the U.S. would soon achieve victory in the Iran conflict.

A poll conducted by Ipsos last weekend showed that among more than 1,000 respondents, 51% believed that the cost of the Iran conflict was not worth it; 24% of respondents believed it was worth it, less than 1/4.

Another poll released yesterday by Quinnipiac University showed that 65% of American voters blamed Trump for the recent rise in oil prices, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz after the outbreak of the Iran war, which pushed up oil prices.

The same poll also pointed out that only 36% of voters approved of Trump's handling of the Iran issue, while 58% disapproved.
