Taipei, April 17 (CNA) -- The Taiwanese Opera Troupe's annual major production, 'Dong Chuang Mou Ji,' directed by Wang You-hui, deconstructs the historical case of 'Dong Chuang Shi Fan' from the Southern Song Dynasty. Inspired by Shakespeare's famous play 'Macbeth,' it parallels the Macbeth couple with the powerful minister Qin Hui, engaging in a dialogue with the classics.

Director and playwright Wang You-hui stated that the creation was inspired by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare's classic play 'Macbeth,' echoing the marital relationship between Qin Hui and Lady Wang. The supernatural power of the three witches in 'Macbeth' was transformed into the Song people's fondness for fortune-telling. The play also draws from 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' and 'Dongjing Meng Hua Lu,' transforming Shakespeare's stage settings into the daily lives of Song Dynasty commoners.

Wang You-hui pointed out that 'Dong Chuang Mou Ji' attempts to explore the inner world of historical figures whose legacies have been sealed by history, as well as the historical facts and doubts revealed in that era, outlining the duality and coexistence of good and bad, loyalty and treachery, good and evil, and prosperity and decline.

According to press materials released by the Taiwanese Opera Troupe, stage designer Zhang Zhe-long and visual designer Wang Yi-sheng collaborated to deconstruct the stage space and project fragments of 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' and Song Dynasty calligraphy. Through sharp brushstrokes and flowing light and shadow, they constructed a psychological space intertwined with classical and modern elements. Costume designer Lin Heng-zheng used red, green, and black as the base colors for the costumes, employing color psychology to hint at political status and inner schemes.

Artistic Director Wang Hai-ling stated that 'Dong Chuang Mou Ji' invited Wang You-hui and Taiwan's leading modern theater design team to create the work. The character settings in the play break away from traditional, formulaic frameworks, with each character possessing a flesh-and-blood soul. She anticipates a highly explosive emotional atmosphere on stage, opening up infinite possibilities for opera performance.

This production features Kao Hsiung Wen-yi Award winner Yin Ching-chun returning to the stage's core after nearly 20 years, taking on the lead role of Qin Hui. Yin Ching-chun expressed gratitude to the playwright for tailoring the role for him. He believes that contemporary opera actors should no longer be confined by traditional role categories but should embrace characters wholeheartedly, imbuing their performance with the characters' essence to resonate with the audience. He is committed to fully dedicating himself to this performance, hoping to move the audience.

The Taiwanese Opera Troupe's newly commissioned historical opera 'Dong Chuang Mou Ji' will be performed on May 23rd and 24th at the Taiwan Theater Center in Taipei, and on June 6th and 7th at the Kaohsiung Dadong Arts Center. (Editor: Guan Zhong-wei) 1150417
