Taichung Mother Smokes Meth, Daughter's Hair Tests Positive; Sentenced to 8 Years in First Instance

(Central News Agency reporter Su Mu-chun, Taichung, 15th) A mother in Taichung, living with her daughter, smoked methamphetamine at her residence when the daughter was between 1 and 3 years old, causing the child to inhale drug fumes. The daughter's hair subsequently tested positive for drugs. After trial, the Taichung District Court recently sentenced the mother to 8 years in prison, a verdict that can be appealed.

According to the prosecutor's indictment, the mother smoked Class 2 controlled drug methamphetamine by burning it in her room at her residence in Tanzi District, Taichung City, at some point between January 18, 2021, and April 16, 2021, and again within one to three months before May 26, 2023.

This caused the mother's cohabiting daughter, then between 1 and 3 years old, still in her infancy and unable to express herself or move, to be forced to inhale smoke containing methamphetamine.

Social workers from the Taichung City Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Center collected hair samples from the girl on April 16, 2021, and May 25, 2023, respectively. Both tests detected positive reactions for methamphetamine and amphetamine. After investigation by the prosecutors, the mother was indicted on charges including violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and endangering the development of a minor.

After trial, the Taichung District Court considered that the defendant should have fulfilled her responsibility to care for her minor child but instead caused the child to inhale drug-containing fumes, and the drug concentration detected in the child's hair was not low. In the first instance, on the 8th, she was sentenced to two terms of 6 years imprisonment each for the crime of an adult using illegal methods to administer Class 2 controlled drugs to a minor, with a combined sentence of 8 years, which can be appealed.
