The Solomon Islands High Court today addressed a 'constitutional stalemate' by ordering Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele to face a vote of no confidence. This political turmoil erupted after 12 ministers resigned and two political parties exited the governing coalition last month. Manele's recent appointment of Manasseh Sogavare, a staunch ally of Beijing, as Deputy Prime Minister further intensified the instability. Chief Justice Albert Palmer ruled that the Prime Minister has no choice but to resign or face the Parliamentary test, stating that delay is not an option. The Solomon Islands remains a key partner for China in the South Pacific, having signed a security pact in 2022.
