(Central News Agency reporter Hsieh Chun-lin, Taipei, April 13) Yu Chih-pin, Deputy Secretary-General of the New Party, was referred by the police for violating the Social Order Maintenance Act after throwing eggs at the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) headquarters in March as a protest. After deliberation, the Taipei District Court ruled that Yu, without legitimate reason, disturbed a public place and imposed a fine of NT$2,000. The ruling can be appealed.

Yu Chih-pin questioned Premier Cho Jung-tai's use of public funds to fly to Japan to watch the 2026 World Baseball Classic. On March 11, he went to the DPP central headquarters and threw eggs, leading to his referral by the police for violating the Social Order Maintenance Act.

The Taipei District Court's ruling stated that the referral document from the Zhongzheng First Precinct of the Taipei City Police Department indicated that Yu Chih-pin, at approximately 13:00 on March 11, 2026, went to the DPP headquarters, holding a kraft paper bag and eggs, and threw eggs towards the DPP headquarters, nearly hitting a reporter. Yu disturbed a public place without cause, as evidenced by surveillance video footage and screenshots, seizure records, a list of seized items, and police duty reports.

According to the ruling, Yu Chih-pin claimed during police questioning that he did not throw the eggs, stating that because Premier Cho Jung-tai used a kraft paper bag to insult legislators, he believed Taiwan would be ruined, so he brought a kraft paper bag and eggs to mock the DPP. He asserted that the eggs fell due to police pushing and pressure.

However, the judge's review of the surveillance video disc proved that Yu Chih-pin indeed threw eggs towards the entrance of the DPP headquarters, nearly hitting someone. Yu's defense was not credible.

The ruling stated that Yu Chih-pin's actions exceeded the reasonable scope tolerated by the general public. Objectively, it interfered with others' normal activities and reached the level of disturbing the peace and order of a public place. It was deemed without legitimate reason. Considering all circumstances of Yu's violation, a fine of NT$2,000 was imposed according to law. (Edited by Lin Shu-hui) 1150413
