Taipei, April 13 (CNA) Belize's Chief Education Officer, Dian Maheia, led a delegation to Taiwan. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi stated at a luncheon today that the delegation's visit would expand opportunities for exchange and further enhance the partnership. Maheia remarked that the relationship between Taiwan and Belize is as close as family.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this evening that Maheia and University of Belize President Vincent Palacio, along with two other delegates, are visiting Taiwan from April 12 to 16. Chen Ming-chi, representing Minister Joseph Wu, hosted a luncheon for Maheia's delegation on April 13, expressing the government's sincere welcome.

Chen Ming-chi welcomed Maheia's second visit to Taiwan, noting that since Taiwan and Belize established diplomatic relations 36 years ago, both sides have continuously deepened cooperation in various fields based on shared values and mutual benefit, with education being a vital pillar of bilateral relations. The two governments have jointly assisted the University of Belize in establishing a regional language center and promoting various scholarship programs, with tangible results.

Chen Ming-chi emphasized that higher education is crucial for promoting talent development and international connections. He believes this visit will help the two countries deepen educational and academic cooperation, expand more exchange opportunities, and further enhance their partnership.

Maheia stated in her address that the relationship between Taiwan and Belize is as close as family, and she felt honored to visit again. She hopes that through this visit, which includes meetings with the Ministry of Education and visits to universities and hospitals, she can gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's higher education policies and practical operations. Maheia previously accompanied Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño to Taiwan in May 2024 to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim. During this second visit, she will meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu, the Ministry of Education, and the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance. She will also visit National Chung Hsing University, Da-Yeh University, Meiho University of Science and Technology, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, and I-Shou University College of Medicine. Additionally, she will participate in a Taiwan-Belize educational exchange forum organized by the Embassy of Belize in Taiwan, engaging in extensive discussions on educational cooperation and academic issues with representatives from 10 universities.
