(CNA reporter You Kai-hsiang, Taipei, April 18) To enhance amphibious combat effectiveness, the Navy Marine Corps has completed the research and development of new tactical vests and recently equipped its personnel. The new vests feature "water survival" and "landing operation" characteristics, adopting a short, thin, and laser-cut design to improve fit and reduce weight. Coupled with the MOLLE system, they increase carrying flexibility, ensuring comfort, protection, and high adaptability during missions.

In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party has continuously engaged in psychological warfare and military threats against Taiwan. The Taiwanese military is not only continuing domestic production and acquiring weapons from abroad but also strengthening training and reforming its systems to respond to potential threats. Recently, keen-eyed citizens noticed that Marine Corps personnel were wearing a thinner tactical bulletproof vest during a national defense event, with reduced shoulder strap width and reduced side coverage. This not only improves body fit but also makes the officers and soldiers appear more agile.

It is understood that this tactical vest was independently developed by the Marine Corps' research and development team based on its own tactical characteristics and manufactured by the Armaments Bureau. It has recently been fully distributed to Marine Corps personnel.

Regarding the design philosophy, R&D features, and expected combat effectiveness of the new tactical vest, the Marine Corps told CNA that to adapt to operational environments and mission types, the new tactical vest's R&D features include both "water survival" and "landing operation" capabilities, ensuring no burden or risk from equipment in amphibious environments. With "high adaptability" and "high mobility" as core principles, its modular design caters to future rapid assault and versatile battlefield mission needs.

In terms of "water survival" and "landing operations," the Marine Corps further explained that the tactical vest adopts a quick-release system for the body, accommodating emergency escape situations. The component connection points use laser-cut technology (directly cutting raw materials with lasers, eliminating the need for extra materials) to achieve weight reduction.

In terms of "high adaptability" and "high mobility," the Marine Corps clarified that the tactical vest is modularized. Components can be assembled according to individual body shape and worn or replaced as needed. It also enhances the flexibility of accessory selection based on mission characteristics.

Furthermore, to support cross-regional reinforcement and security missions, the ballistic plate connection points are designed with a wrapping structure to increase long-term wear comfort for personnel. The cummerbund is expanded with MOLLE system attachment points, allowing for the addition of rifle magazine pouches, grenade pouches, pistol pouches, grenade launcher pouches, etc., according to mission requirements to meet various operational needs.

Regarding the R&D timeline, production quantity, and deployment plan for the new tactical vest, the Marine Corps stated that the project began in 2020, took approximately 4 years to complete R&D in 2024, and was manufactured by the Armaments Bureau last year. The replacement for Marine Corps personnel will be completed soon, with gradual replenishment of stock planned annually. (Editor: Zhai Sijia) 1150418
