(CNA Reporter Lu Tai-cheng, Taitung County, 18th) The Museum Road underpass, the main access road to the National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung, is low-lying and floods whenever there are typhoons or heavy rains, affecting vehicle traffic. The Taitung City Office is investing NT$1.2 million to replace the pumping motors, hoping to complete the work by late April.

Museum Road in Taitung City is an important passageway to and from the museum, but the underpass in the middle section is low-lying and frequently accumulates water. Due to the large height difference in the piping and severe vibration during operation, the joints of the original pumping equipment are prone to breaking, which affects the pumping function. The Taitung City Office has been planning to install electromechanical facilities such as lane barriers since 2023 to enhance control and early warning. This year, it is further replacing the pumping equipment to improve drainage capacity.

Taitung City Representative Tsai Cheng-chia has repeatedly inquired at the Taitung City Council, requesting the Taitung City Office to complete the project before the flood season arrives.

Lai Yu-tsung, head of the Public Works Section of the Taitung City Office, told a CNA reporter today that this project will replace six old pumps with three new motors and install trash-blocking equipment to prevent sand and garbage from entering the units. "Otherwise, the pump blades wear out extremely fast," he said.

He mentioned that the project has already been contracted out. Once the equipment is in place, the concrete structure will be repaired simultaneously, and the connection sections will be secured with flanges instead of the easily broken PVC pipes used in the past, thereby enhancing durability and stability.

Lai Yu-tsung stated that the project could be completed as early as late April, and no later than May, striving to finish the improvements before the flood season to reduce the risk of flooding in the underpass and ensure the safety of road users. (Editor: Li Shu-hua) 1150418
