(CNA Reporter Tai Ya-chen, Tokyo, 17th) The Middle East war has affected the supply of petroleum-related products, prompting the Japanese government to initiate response measures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on the evening of the 16th that starting in May, 50 million pairs of medical gloves from the national stockpile will be released, with priority given to medical institutions facing shortages to stabilize the operation of the medical system.

According to Japan's Fuji News Network (FNN), Takaichi stated during a cabinet meeting on the Middle East situation that the "disruption in the distribution of medical supplies is gradually improving," but emphasized that "no worst-case scenarios are absolutely permissible," instructing the early release of strategic reserves to prevent supply interruptions.

Takaichi pointed out that these gloves were originally stockpiled in response to the pandemic, and there is currently an inventory of nearly 500 million pairs available for release. In the future, applications for demand will be accepted through the "Medical Institutions Information Support System," and real-time distribution will be carried out according to the actual needs of local medical institutions.

According to estimates by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the monthly demand for medical gloves across Japan is about 90 million pairs. The authorities aim to establish a distribution mechanism within May to ensure that 50 million pairs of gloves can smoothly reach medical institutions with critically low inventories. Furthermore, depending on changes in supply and demand, further additional releases will not be ruled out if necessary. (Editor: Kao Chao-fen) 1150417
