(Central News Agency, reporter Chang Chi, Hualien County, 18th) April to October is the peak season for whale watching in Hualien County. The Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA) of the Ocean Affairs Council held the "Friendly Whale Watching Launch" event at the Xiangri Square in Hualien Fishing Port today, promoting the principles of observing from a distance, no feeding, and no chasing, to minimize the disturbance to the lives of cetaceans.

Lee Hsiao-hsia, Deputy Director-General of the OCA, attended the launch ceremony and stated that the OCA has formulated friendly whale watching guidelines, training courses, and certifications. By cooperating with operators to promote relevant regulations, people can enjoy whale watching while minimizing the disturbance to the cetaceans' living environment.

Five operators from Hualien Fishing Port and Shitiping Fishing Port participated in the launch ceremony, providing 5 free trips to take tourists out to sea for whale watching.

Wang Teng-i, Chairman of the Hualien District Fishermen's Association, stated that Hualien has 10 whale watching boats. Through the promotion of friendly whale watching, tourists can understand how to care for and protect the ocean, going out to sea with an attitude of mutual respect so that the ocean can thrive endlessly.

According to statistics from the Agriculture Department of the Hualien County Government, the annual output value of the local whale watching industry was over NT$500 million before the COVID-19 pandemic. After experiencing the pandemic and the low point of the 0403 massive earthquake, it once dropped to below NT$200 million. As the disaster areas gradually recover, the Agriculture Department predicts that it is hopeful to gradually return to pre-pandemic levels this year.
