(Central News Agency Reporter Li Xian-feng Hualien County, 15th) After the Hualien Guangfu flood in September last year, in addition to the repair of hardware facilities, it is also a long-term psychological reconstruction project; the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Yuli Hospital promotes the "Mata'an Psychological Reconstruction Plan," designing diverse activities at cultural health stations and other locations to inject stabilizing power through companionship.

Yuli Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare stated today that it has proactively entered the community after the disaster and has been promoting the "Mata'an Psychological Reconstruction Plan" continuously to this day. The initial intention of the plan is to provide a safe and familiar environment for the elderly to naturally release stress through daily interactions.

The team chose locations such as the Dajin Activity Center in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, the Shalao Cultural Health Station, and the Mafu Cultural Health Station to design diverse group activities, integrating mental health support into daily life and injecting stabilizing power through companionship.

During the companionship process, the team observed that elderly people in rural areas were less familiar with one-on-one counseling, and were even resistant to home visits due to their guardedness; language barriers and existing medical habits also made traditional psychological counseling difficult to promote.

Lin Yi-sheng, Director of Clinical Psychology at Yuli Hospital, pointed out that after a sudden stressful event, the elderly often find it difficult to accurately express their inner unease. If standardized medical intervention is imposed, it may erect psychological barriers; conversely, through group cohesion and soft companionship, allowing mental health knowledge to naturally transform into life interactions is the most effective support.

Therefore, clinical psychologist Lai Yun-teng and the team planned multiple group activities to guide the elderly in experiencing mindful breathing through handicrafts and fun interactions, gradually learning to be aware of their emotions and stress.

Yu Quan-xun, Director of General Psychiatry at Yuli Hospital, stated that Yuli Hospital has always regarded protecting the mental health of rural areas as its mission. When the community faces challenges, the medical outreach must extend beyond the clinic to actively approach those in need.

Yu Quan-xun said, "We are not only responding to the immediate challenges, but also hope to deeply instill mental health concepts in the community through the continuous investment of professional teams, making Yuli Hospital the strongest support for the people in the southern district of Hualien, helping everyone regain their life balance and confidence."

Yuli Hospital pointed out that as themes such as art therapy and dementia prevention are gradually launched, the elderly in Mata'an have gradually found their rhythm and smiles in familiar spaces. In the future, they will continue to uphold the belief of listening and companionship, and create a mental health safety net for the community in every corner that needs warmth.
