(CNA Reporter Huang Yu-ching, Pingtung County, 18th) A fire broke out at a residence in Yanpu Township, Pingtung County around 9 PM tonight. The single-story house was fully engulfed in flames. A 70-year-old mobility-impaired woman was trapped and found dead at the scene. Her son managed to escape on his own but suffered burns to his knees and palms and was sent to Pingtung Christian Hospital for treatment.

The Pingtung County Government Fire Bureau released a message today stating that they received a report from the public at 9:33 PM tonight about a fire at a residence on Shengli Street in Yanpu Township. The caller indicated that a single-story building was on fire and that an elderly mobility-impaired female was suspected to be trapped inside.

Upon receiving the report, the Pingtung County Fire Bureau immediately dispatched personnel and vehicles from the First Battalion, Special Search and Rescue Battalion, and the Yanpu, Ligang, Changzhi, and Jiuru branches to the rescue. A total of 13 various fire engines and 21 firefighters were deployed, with Battalion Commander Chen Kun-wu serving as the on-site commander.

The Pingtung County Fire Bureau noted that the building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. They immediately deployed water lines to extinguish the fire and organized a search and rescue team to enter the fire scene. At 9:59 PM, a charred body was found inside the house. Additionally, a conscious 50-year-old male victim had escaped on his own with 5% second-degree burns to his knees and palms, and was sent to Pingtung Christian Hospital by ambulance at 10:11 PM. The deceased and the injured were mother and son.

The Pingtung County Fire Bureau mentioned that the fire was extinguished at 9:59 PM. The detailed cause of the fire is pending further investigation by fire investigators. The bureau also urged the public that if they have family members with mobility issues, they should plan escape and evacuation routes in advance and enhance fire and electricity safety to prevent disasters.
