The Taipei District Court today sentenced former DPP legislator Chen Ou-po to 16 years in prison and deprived him of civil rights for 6 years, for bribery and fraudulent claims of assistant fees. The criminal proceeds amounted to over NT$8.74 million. The Taipei Prosecutors' Office had sought a sentence of 24 years and 2 months. The verdict can be appealed. Chiu Chun-yen, chairman of the DPP Ethics Committee, told the Central News Agency that the committee will hold its regular meeting on April 22 and will discuss Chen Ou-po's case. He noted that the Ethics Committee operates under a collegial system, and according to its regulations, the lightest penalty is suspension, while the most severe is expulsion.
