According to a report by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), the Japan Meteorological Agency observed the epicenter to be in northern Nagano Prefecture at a depth of about 10 kilometers, with an estimated magnitude of 5.0.

Ogawa Village in Nagano Prefecture recorded an intensity of 4; while Matsumoto City, Masumi Village, Ikusaka Village, Chikuhoku Village, Ikeda Town, Matsukawa Town, Hakuba Village, Otari Village, Shinano Town, and Iizuna Town recorded an intensity of 3.

Following the earthquake, the Japanese government established a liaison office at the Prime Minister's Official Residence's crisis management center to collect information and confirm disaster damage.

The Meteorological Agency pointed out that this is the first time since the magnitude 5.2 earthquake in northern Nagano Prefecture in May 2018 that an intensity of 5-upper has been measured. At that time, Sakae Village in Nagano Prefecture recorded an intensity of 5-upper.
