Dubai's Burj Al Arab to undergo 18-month renovation, staff confirm temporary closure

(CNA Dubai, April 15, [2026] Compiled Foreign News) A staff member at Dubai's Burj Al Arab hotel confirmed today that the hotel will temporarily cease operations during an extensive 18-month renovation. While drone debris caused a fire on the hotel's exterior last month when intercepted, the employee stated the renovation plan is unrelated to that incident.

Reuters reported that this is the first major renovation for the Burj Al Arab since its opening in 1999, occurring at a time when local tourist traffic has decreased due to the US-led war against Iran.

Jumeirah Group, the hotel's owner, issued a statement yesterday saying the renovation work will be carried out in phases and is expected to take approximately 18 months, led by Parisian interior architect Tristan Auer. However, the statement did not explicitly state that the hotel would be closed during the renovation.

Hotel staff indicated that guests with existing reservations will be offered alternative accommodation at nearby hotels during the renovation period. The employee added that the actual closure period might still be adjusted.

In early March of this year, fragments from an intercepted Iranian drone struck the exterior of the Burj Al Arab, causing partial damage to the building.

The employee stated that this "long-awaited" renovation plan is unrelated to the March incident. Jumeirah Group, based in the United Arab Emirates, also did not link the plan to regional conflicts in its statement.
