(Central News Agency reporter Ho Hsiu-ling, Taipei, April 15) The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced its "Sustainable Steel Companies" for 2026, with China Steel being selected for the third time. China Steel stated that in recent years, it has continuously promoted carbon reduction and process optimization. Statistics show that from 2018 to 2025, it completed over a thousand carbon reduction schemes, achieving an annual carbon reduction of 1.587 million metric tons, and has met its short-term carbon reduction target.

China Steel announced today via a press release that following its awards in 2019 and 2024, this is its third time receiving this award from the World Steel Association. It stands alongside other distinguished international steel companies such as ArcelorMittal, the world's second-largest steel producer; EMSTEEL, the largest steel manufacturer in the United Arab Emirates; and HYUNDAI Steel from South Korea.

China Steel pointed out that the World Steel Association is composed of hundreds of members, including steel enterprises, industry associations, and research institutions from various countries worldwide. It is one of the largest and most active global industry associations and the most representative organization in the steel industry. Its "Sustainable Steel Company" evaluation is regarded as the highest-level sustainability assessment in the global steel industry.

China Steel stated that in facing the challenging goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, it has established a climate governance framework. Since 2006, it has annually conducted greenhouse gas inventories and established product carbon footprints according to ISO 14067 standards. Furthermore, in February 2021, it set up an energy-saving, carbon reduction, and carbon neutrality promotion task force, intensifying efforts in energy-saving processes, improving energy and resource efficiency, promoting a circular economy, deploying renewable energy, and deepening carbon reduction technologies.

Statistics show that from 2018 to 2025, China Steel cumulatively completed 1,459 carbon reduction schemes, achieving an annual carbon reduction of 1.587 million metric tons. In 2025, this represented a 7.18% reduction compared to 2018, fulfilling the short-term carbon reduction target of 7%. It continues to build up the technological capabilities required for the carbon neutrality pathway, moving towards its medium- and long-term carbon reduction goals. (Edited by Lin Chia-huan) 1150415
