(CNA Reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, 17th) A 5-month-old infant was abused to death in Tainan City last year. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation today, indicting the parents and a woman surnamed Ling who lived with them. The case was transferred to the Tainan District Court, which ruled that the biological father, surnamed Fang, and Ling be detained incommunicado.

The Tainan District Court pointed out today that Fang and Ling are heavily suspected of committing felonies, including causing death by hindering sound physical and mental development, causing the death of a child by an adult, and destroying a corpse. As the offenses carry a minimum sentence of over 5 years and there is a likelihood of collusion and flight, the court ordered their detention and prohibited them from visitation and correspondence.

The Tainan City Government's Public Health Bureau and Social Affairs Bureau discovered the baby's whereabouts were unknown last year and reported it to the police. On the evening of December 18 of the same year, police found the baby's body in a drainage ditch in Xinshi District. An autopsy by the prosecutor confirmed the baby had been dead for several days and had multiple unexplained injuries. At the time, prosecutors successfully sought the detention of Fang and Ling, while the biological mother, surnamed Lin, was restricted to her residence.

Investigations revealed that Fang and Lin are husband and wife, while Ling and Fang are sworn siblings. They initially lived together in Xinshi District and moved to Yongkang District in October last year. The baby boy was born in July last year. (Editor: Hsieh Ya-chu) 1150417
