(CNA Reporter Lin Qiaolian, Kaohsiung, 16th) The Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs announced today that the renovation of the East Cloister of the Zuoying Confucius Temple has been completed and is now open. Under the planning of the Kaohsiung Museum of History, this is not only an update of facilities but also an adjustment of the East Cloister space into an exhibition room and multi-purpose "Xuesi Lecture Hall."
The Bureau of Cultural Affairs issued a press release today stating that historically, the Confucius Temple served both educational and governance functions, being an important venue for generating knowledge and values; however, with the establishment of modern education systems, it gradually shifted to a place for rituals and tourism. This time, besides facility updates, the goal is to redefine "what it means to learn" in a public space, making the Confucius Temple no longer just a place to pass down existing knowledge.
The Bureau of Cultural Affairs said that the transformation of the East Cloister attempts to reopen the relationship between the Confucius Temple and contemporary society. While preserving the foundation of the existing architecture, contemporary spatial design is introduced to reconstruct the venue into an exhibition room and multi-purpose "Xuesi Lecture Hall," transforming the Confucius Temple from a cultural asset into an engaging public space.
To coincide with the reopening, the Confucius Temple launched the "Full of Sincerity - Wang Jincheng Creative Touring Solo Exhibition." The Bureau of Cultural Affairs explained that the exhibition revolves around calligraphy, integrating the spirit of Taiwanese folk art with multimedia creations. The "Xuesi Lecture Hall" was also opened simultaneously, launching a series of lectures themed around "Youth Studies."
Furthermore, the Confucius Temple also launched a "Letter to Future Self" event. The public can write messages to themselves beside the Dacheng Hall, and after paying respects to Confucius, drop them into the "Messages for the Future" box, which the museum will then store in the "Heart-Storing Cabinet" and mail back in 3 years.
The Kaohsiung Museum of History stated that in the future, it will continue to use exhibitions, lectures, and cultural actions to ensure the Confucius Temple is no longer just a statically preserved cultural asset, but a public scene that continuously generates discussions, ideas, and actions. It invites citizens to walk into the Confucius Temple, to the place where tradition and the contemporary meet, and rethink "why we learn, and what kind of person we will become."
