(CNA Reporter Yang Ssu-jui, Tainan, 15th) In response to the fact that food waste is no longer used to feed pigs, the Tainan City Government Education Bureau is guiding schools at all levels to reduce lunch food waste. In addition to promoting precise meal provisioning and food cherishing education to reduce leftovers from the source, it also encourages the breeding of black soldier flies and raw food waste composting to implement a circular economy.
Tainan City Government Education Bureau Director Cheng Hsin-hui told a CNA reporter today that, facing the trend of net-zero sustainability, the food waste issue is a composite issue encompassing dietary education, food and agriculture education, and environmental education. The Education Bureau is promoting campus food waste reduction through a systematic strategy, taking a dual-track approach of source reduction and end-of-pipe reuse.
Cheng Hsin-hui said that in addition to continuously promoting food cherishing education and precise meal provisioning, the Education Bureau encourages schools to introduce diverse methods, such as black soldier fly treatment or raw food waste composting, based on their characteristics and conditions. This transforms food waste into reusable resources and integrates it with curricula, implementing circular economy concepts from schools to communities.
He mentioned that Houbi Junior High School combined black soldier flies with science courses and life application experiences. Through bio-conversion technology, they effectively reduced the amount of food waste and produced high-protein feed and organic fertilizer. This possesses both environmental and educational significance and has shown initial results. The Education Bureau has also organized workshops, inviting teachers and students from Houbi Junior High School to share their practical experience in breeding black soldier flies.
Cheng Hsin-hui stated that they will continue to hold workshops and provide guidance in the future. Combined with food and agriculture education and environmental education, they aim to help schools establish long-lasting, localized food waste treatment models, allowing students to understand the importance of cherishing food and protecting the environment.
