(CNA Reporter Yang Szu-jui, Tainan, 15th) The Tainan City Government, in collaboration with cybersecurity experts from Taiwan and the United States, will hold a cybersecurity defense competition in June. The competition will use the city government's official information systems as a practical battlefield, aiming to consolidate the cooperation model between the city government and the cybersecurity professional community through attack and defense mechanisms, thereby strengthening joint cyber defense and emergency response capabilities.
The Tainan City Government held a press conference today for the 2nd "Hack The Tainan Red and Blue Team Cybersecurity Competition" at the Cybersecurity and Smart Technology R&D Building in the Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City. Deputy Mayor Chao Ching-hui and Neil H. Gibson, Branch Chief of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Kaohsiung Branch, jointly announced that registration is open from today until 5:00 PM on May 15th.
Chao Ching-hui stated in her speech that Tainan City held its first real-world red and blue team attack and defense drill last year. It was not only a contest of skill and strength but also a comprehensive test of teamwork, emergency response, and judgment. As a result of the competition, more than 150 system vulnerabilities were discovered; after patching them, service security was effectively improved.
Chao added that Tainan possesses several critical infrastructure elements, such as the Southern Taiwan Science Park and the Shalun Science City, making cybersecurity work extremely important. She hopes all participating teams will do their best, exchange experiences during the competition, and inject new momentum into cybersecurity development.
Neil H. Gibson stated that facing increasingly complex cybersecurity challenges, strengthening cross-departmental, cross-disciplinary, and transnational cooperation has become key to enhancing digital resilience. By actively promoting red and blue team attack and defense drills, Tainan City demonstrates its high regard for cybersecurity governance and talent cultivation. The AIT Kaohsiung Branch will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with Tainan City and partners from all sectors to jointly create a safer and more trustworthy digital environment.
Wang Hsiao-wen, Chairperson of the Tainan City Research, Development, and Evaluation Commission, said that this year's competition uses the city government's official information systems as the battlefield and will be conducted online. Those interested are welcome to form teams and participate. Through this attack and defense mechanism, they hope to consolidate the public-private partnership model between the city government and the cybersecurity community, further strengthening the local government's overall cyber defense capacity and incident response capabilities.
