(Central News Agency reporter Su Mu-chun, Taichung, 15th) A man surnamed Hsieh, the owner of a camping area in Nantou County, was dissatisfied with an employee surnamed Chang. In May 2024, he led other employees to torture Chang to death. Hsieh was sentenced to 14 years and 6 months in the first trial for the crime of inflicting injury causing death. After an appeal to the Taiwan High Court Taichung Branch, the sentence was reduced today to 10 years and 6 months. The case can still be appealed.

According to the prosecutor's indictment, Hsieh was the operator of the "He Le Camping Area" on Yongle Road in Zhongliao Township, Nantou County, and the boss of the deceased, Chang. Dissatisfied with Chang's living habits and work attitude, Hsieh, along with other employees surnamed He, Hsu, and Tsui, jointly beat Chang at the campsite's commissary on May 11, 2024.

Hsieh and the others did not just use their bare hands; they also attacked with iron chairs, plastic chairs, thin water pipes, thick water pipes, fishing rods, a drill base, utility knives, scissors, and other objects. The four of them took turns beating Chang for about an hour.

After temporarily stopping, the group continued the beating later that evening until Chang collapsed. Claiming that he was playing dead, they used torturous methods such as stabbing his body with utility knives and applying salt to the wounds to wake him up, but Chang remained unconscious. Paramedics arrived early the next morning, but Chang died of intracranial hemorrhage and cerebral edema caused by blunt force trauma to the head. After investigation, prosecutors indicted Hsieh and the other three for inflicting injury causing death.

After the first trial by the Nantou District Court, a verdict was announced in July 2025. Hsieh was sentenced to 14 years and 6 months in prison for jointly committing injury causing death, while the other three received sentences ranging from 11 years and 6 months to 14 years.

The case was appealed to the Taichung Branch of the High Court. The collegial panel took into consideration that all four defendants, including Hsieh, had reached mediation settlements with the victim's family, and partial compensation had already been paid. The original verdict was revoked today. Hsieh was re-sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for injury causing death, and the others received sentences ranging from 8 years and 6 months to 10 years and 2 months. The case remains appealable. (Editor: Wu Su-jou)
