The Ministry of Agriculture pre-announced amendments to washed egg regulations in January, requiring catering businesses with 30 or more chain locations, 15 or more bakery chains, or 50 or more breakfast shops, or businesses with a corporate capital of NT$10 million or more, to be included in the washed egg traceability targets from July.
Furthermore, washed eggs used by the aforementioned businesses must implement per-egg spray printing, registration in the production and distribution traceability system, and prepare relevant records for inspection.
The Ministry of Agriculture previously estimated that after the new system goes into effect on July 1, approximately 330 companies and over 13,000 chain stores will be brought under management.
However, there are rumors that the new washed egg system's approach is not mandatory but rather incentivized. The Ministry of Agriculture issued a press release today to explain that washed eggs are part of the national overall food safety policy, continuously strengthening the egg traceability system.
The Ministry of Agriculture stated that the policy for comprehensive egg washing and spray printing is jointly discussed by the Executive Yuan's Office of Food Safety, the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration, and the Ministry of Agriculture. It is non-mandatory and encouraging in nature. Both chain businesses and the Ministry supported this initiative during cross-ministerial briefing sessions in 112 and 114 (2023 and 2025). To implement this, the FDA will guide end-market retailers in using washed eggs, while the Ministry of Agriculture will strengthen the existing washed egg traceability system.
The Ministry of Agriculture's press release also mentioned that the Office of Food Safety believes washing eggs helps reduce the risk of food poisoning caused by Salmonella and allows for the rapid withdrawal of suspect eggs. Joint inspections will be conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure food safety.
According to Ministry of Agriculture statistics, Taiwan's average daily egg demand is 124,000 boxes (200 eggs per box), and the current coverage rate of washed eggs is about 40%. (Editor: Wu Su-rou) 1150415
