(Yunlin County, CNA reporter Chiang Yi-ching, 13th) The Lunzi Bridge in Yunlin County is a mandatory passage for the annual Dajia Zhenlan Temple Mazu Pilgrimage. However, the bridge was old and narrow, prompting joint efforts by the central and local governments to rebuild it. Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan announced today that the northbound lane of Lunzi Bridge is open to traffic, allowing Dajia Mazu pilgrims to use the new bridge when traveling from Yunlin to Chiayi County on April 20.

The Yunlin County Transportation and Public Works Bureau held the opening ceremony for the northbound lane of Lunzi Bridge on County Road 145A today. County Magistrate Chang Li-shan, KMT Legislator Ting Hsueh-chung, and Xingang Fengtian Temple Chairman Ho Ta-huang witnessed the event.

Chang Li-shan stated that Lunzi Bridge, spanning the Beigang River, is a critical bridge in the county and an essential route for the annual Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage to Xingang Fengtian Temple. The bridge, 772 meters long, was built in 1981 (Republic of China year 70), making it over 40 years old. Its existing width was only 7 meters, often leading to conflicts between cars and motorcycles. Furthermore, the bridge's girder bottom was lower than the Beigang River's flood control plan elevation. Consequently, the central and local governments jointly funded its reconstruction, totaling NT$1.021 billion.

Director of Transportation and Public Works Bureau Wang Ling-yao explained that the Lunzi Bridge reconstruction project commenced on December 5, 2023 (Republic of China year 112), and is being carried out in two phases. The first phase involves constructing the new northbound lane. After traffic shifts to the new lane, the second phase will demolish the old bridge to build the southbound lane. The new bridge will be 18 meters wide and have four lanes.

Following the opening of the northbound lane, traffic diversion measures have been implemented, and the southbound lane is now closed for construction, with the entire bridge expected to be completed by July next year.

The Dajia Zhenlan Temple Mazu Pilgrimage from Taichung will begin at 10:05 PM on April 17, embarking on a 9-day, 8-night journey. It is expected to pass through Lunzi Bridge from Yunlin County into Chiayi County on April 20. At that time, the Mazu sedan chair and pilgrims can use the new bridge to reach Xingang Fengtian Temple.
