Agence France-Presse reported that, with 97.35% of polling stations counted in the official election results, political newcomer Peter Magyar's Respect and Freedom Party (Tisza) won 138 out of 199 parliamentary seats with 53.6% of the vote.

Viktor Orbán's Fidesz, which had been in power for 16 years, received 37.8% of the vote, securing 55 seats.

According to nearly complete vote counts, this election saw a record-high voter turnout of 79.50%.

After the election, Magyar told cheering supporters in Budapest: "We did it... we overthrew the Orbán regime together."

He said voters "liberated Hungary, reclaimed our homeland," and called the victory a "miracle" for the Central European country of 9.5 million people.

The 45-year-old political newcomer, who previously served within the government but has limited political experience, told supporters: "Today, the people of Hungary said Yes to Europe."

He promised to "restore checks and balances... guarantee the democratic functioning of the country," and put Hungary "back on track." He admitted it was a "daunting" task and called for national unity, emphasizing that the victory belongs to "all Hungarians."

Orbán told the media: "Although the election results are not yet final, they are very clear and easy to understand; for us, such a result is heartbreaking, but also without suspense."

He said: "We were not given the responsibility and opportunity to govern. I have already congratulated the winning party." (Editor: Tsai Chia-Min) 1150413
