The Cianjhen Precinct of the Kaohsiung City Police Department received a report from a citizen stating that a female suspect had been selling 23 artificial diamonds of unknown origin to a jewelry store in the Cianjhen District between late last year and January this year. The fake diamonds were so realistic that even the store's appraiser was initially fooled. It was only after the store sent the diamonds to a third-party professional appraisal unit that they realized they were all artificial and had been defrauded of NT$4.162 million.

The Cianjhen Precinct stated to CNA today that the woman always came alone to sell diamonds and had become a regular customer. After accepting the report, the police maintained close contact with the store and monitored the suspect's movements. Following intelligence from the informant, it was learned that the woman would come for another transaction on February 12th of this year. The police then cooperated with the store to meticulously set up an ambush.

When the woman entered the store around 7 PM on February 12th, carrying 15 fake diamonds to sell, the alert on-site appraiser immediately identified them as fakes. The ambushing police officers then revealed themselves, but the woman feigned innocence. The police seized the 15 fake diamonds on the spot, successfully preventing further fraud and avoiding an additional loss of NT$2.657 million for the store. They also arrested the 54-year-old Ms. Li, who has a prior record of fraud.

During police questioning, Ms. Li claimed the fake diamonds were brought to her by a friend from Hong Kong. However, the police are suspicious of her statement. The case has been transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutor's Office for investigation. After a preliminary hearing, prosecutors requested pre-trial detention from the Kaohsiung District Court, which was granted. The investigation into the source of the fake diamonds is ongoing.
