Cheng Li-wen Visits China; DPP Caucus: Accepting the 1992 Consensus Means Accepting One Country, Two Systems

Legislator Cheng Li-wen's delegation visited China and was hosted for dinner by Song Tao, Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the CCP, in Nanjing on the 7th. During her speech, Cheng Li-wen stated that this visit to the mainland once again proves that the political foundation of '1992 Consensus, Oppose Taiwan Independence' is 'still evergreen.' DPP legislative caucus whip Chuang Jui-hsiung, convener Fan Yun, and deputy whip Chen Pei-yu held a press conference today titled 'The Future of Cross-Strait Relations Cannot Be Decided Privately by the KMT and DPP.' Chuang Jui-hsiung pointed out that Cheng Li-wen said the '1992 Consensus' is evergreen, but Chinese President Xi Jinping long ago negated 'one China, with different interpretations,' and defined the cross-strait relationship as both sides belonging to one China. The DPP caucus wants to emphasize again that accepting the '1992 Consensus' means accepting 'One Country, Two Systems,' and calls on the KMT not to mistake China's unification process for a peace option. Fan Yun explained that the DPP has always supported peace and exchange, but it must be backed by strength, otherwise, there will be no equal and dignified exchange. She urged KMT legislators to participate in the special draft law negotiation on national defense to be held by the Legislative Yuan's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee on the 9th, and to review the general budget proposal for referral to committee in the Legislative Yuan session on the 10th. When asked about Song Tao's remarks during his meeting with Cheng Li-wen that 'compatriots on both sides of the strait have the ability and wisdom to resolve their own family matters,' Chuang Jui-hsiung responded that if KMT-CCP exchanges are normal and unconditional, the DPP expresses welcome. However, if accepting the '1992 Consensus' can dispel tragic feelings, it would terrify the Taiwanese people. For Taiwan, democracy is an option and the only path to survival. Peace across the Taiwan Strait is actually very simple: the CCP should stop conducting military exercises against Taiwan on a whim and abandon its deterrence. Fan Yun believes that Taiwanese people cannot accept Song Tao's statement because it attempts to 'domesticate' Taiwan's internal affairs and the Taiwan Strait issue.
