(CNA Washington, July 2nd, Combined News and Foreign Reports) The United States will bury a "time capsule" on July 4th, its Independence Day and 250th anniversary, in Philadelphia, allowing Americans in 2276 to glimpse what their 21st-century ancestors considered most representative of the U.S.

According to Agence France-Presse, this stainless steel cylinder, weighing approximately 400 kilograms, will be buried underground on the 4th, near Independence Hall, where the U.S. Declaration of Independence was signed.

The time capsule is planned to be sealed for 250 years, not to be opened until 2276, the 500th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

However, this is not the only gift left for future generations. Washington recently announced that it will also bury another time capsule scheduled to be opened on the 500th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

While the contents of the Washington time capsule have not yet been disclosed, the contents of the Philadelphia time capsule have been fully revealed: items have been provided by all 50 states, five overseas territories including Puerto Rico, and various sports and cultural organizations, collectively piecing together a microcosm reflecting contemporary America.

Rosie Rios, chair of "America250," a non-partisan organization established by Congress to organize official events for the 250th anniversary, stated that these items collectively form a "representative record of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States."

For example, Wisconsin provided a brown feather. This feather comes from a bald eagle named after the late U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

Ohio provided a piece of fabric taken from the wing of an airplane manufactured by the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville Wright). The Wright brothers completed the first sustained powered flight in human history in 1903, ushering in a new era in aviation history.

Some states have chosen more modern items. For instance, California provided the answer from the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Claude to the following question: "Starting from July 4, 2026, please predict what California will be like in 250 years?"

"America250" included a new orange iPhone.

Other selected items include: a bookmark made by the Wabanaki Confederacy of Indigenous Nations, a diamond produced in Arkansas, a recipe for anise cookies from New Mexico, and a commemorative badge for the Oklahoma City Thunder winning the 2025 National Basketball Association (NBA) championship.
