US-Iran War Key News

(CNA Dubai, July 2 -- Interfax) Iran's joint military command warned today that all oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz must follow routes approved by Iran, or face a "strong response," a move that has once again escalated tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz has become one of the most critical issues in the US-Iran peace talks, according to the Associated Press.

Just yesterday, US and Iranian delegations concluded indirect talks in Qatar. Today, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters issued a statement through Iranian state television, emphasizing that "any act of non-compliance, deviation from designated routes, or disregard for Iran's navigation regulations in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with an immediate and strong response from the armed forces, endangering the safety of the non-compliant vessel."

The statement also pointed out that any interference by the US military in the Strait of Hormuz "will also face a swift and decisive response."

It remains unclear why Iran issued such a warning today.

Foreign media speculate that a statement issued by the US Central Command following a recent meeting with leaders of Middle Eastern countries in Bahrain may have triggered Iran's dissatisfaction. The statement said: "Leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz."

In a temporary agreement, the US and Iran agreed to allow free passage for vessels within 60 days. However, Tehran insists on controlling the vessel routes and charging passage fees thereafter, overturning decades of international practice in the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and many Arab countries in the Persian Gulf region have stated that they will not agree to Iran's collection of passage fees. Oman and United Nations agencies have attempted to open new routes near the coast of Oman, but multiple attacks across the Middle East last weekend have highlighted the persistent tensions.
